An oasis to explore on foot

Skoura is one of Morocco's loveliest oases, a place where travellers can pause in the cool shade. Driving along route N10 does not do it justice: you need to stop and walk into it. The oasis is so large that getting lost is possible, but its inhabitants are among the friendliest people you will meet and always ready to help.

Hiring a guide is a good idea. A guide can explain the intricate agricultural system of the oasis, lead you to its hidden corners and tell you about the underground khettara channels that carry water to the gardens. It is the best way to understand how life in the palm grove works.

Kasbahs, picnics and horse rides

Visitors come to Skoura for the seventeenth century Amridil Kasbah, the Ben Abou kasbah and the other famous kasbahs hidden in the palm grove, but also simply for the peaceful atmosphere. Enjoy a picnic under a palm tree, join a guided horseback ride, or unwind by your hotel pool.

Skoura is also where several Quad Ouarzazate trips begin: the 1000 Kasbahs and Todra Gorges day trip visits Amridil here, the Valley of Roses day trip crosses the palm grove, and the Erg Chebbi desert tours stop in Skoura on the first morning.

Monday souk and where to stay

The weekly market takes place every Monday and draws people from villages far and wide. It keeps a traditional feel, with fresh vegetables, fruit and meat alongside local products you may not find in the souks of Ouarzazate. Market days can occasionally change, so confirm locally.

Many visitors choose to spend the night. Most accommodation is in lodges, guest houses and kasbahs run by local families. Finding a room is easy; choosing between so many beautiful places is the real challenge, so weigh atmosphere, amenities and distance to the sights you want to see.
