Mhamid or Erg Chigaga Desert Tour, 2 Days and 1 Night

A private two day trip south through the Draa Valley to the dunes of Mhamid or, further off road, Erg Chigaga.

Recommended for travellers staying in Ouarzazate or Skoura. The Mhamid dunes, called Erg Lihoudi, lie northwest of the village where the paved road ends. Erg Chigaga is more remote, an extra hour and a half off road beyond Mhamid.

Wherever you choose, you ride a camel at sunset and live like a nomad in a Berber camp of camel and goat wool tents. A luxury camp upgrade is available for both on request at extra cost. Erg Chigaga is six hours from Ouarzazate, Mhamid four and a half.

Itinerary

  1. Day 1: Ouarzazate, Draa Valley, Mhamid or Erg Chigaga

    Pickup at your hotel at 8 am and depart across the Anti Atlas and the palm groves of the Draa. Walk through the kasbah and village of Tamnougalt, continue to Zagora for lunch, then stop at Tamegroute, the village of potters with its old manuscript library. Drive on via Tagounit to Mhamid, or further to Erg Chigaga, for a sunset camel ride and a night in a tent.

  2. Day 2: Mhamid or Erg Chigaga, Ouarzazate

    Wake early for sunrise over the dunes, then breakfast and the drive back to Ouarzazate through the Draa Valley and Agdz, with any stops you missed the first day and the option of the old Jewish quarter of Amzerou near Zagora.
