Quad, Buggy and Horse Experiences Near Ait Ben Haddou
How to reach the UNESCO ksar of Ait Ben Haddou by quad, buggy or horse from Ouarzazate, what you see on the way, the history behind the walls and tips for the day.

Ait Ben Haddou is the most famous sight in the Ouarzazate region, and most visitors arrive by road, park and walk in. There is another way. Riding there across the desert, by quad, buggy or horse, turns the visit into a journey, with plateaus, riverbeds and Berber villages leading up to the moment the earthen towers appear on their hill. Here is what to expect from each option, what you will see, and how to make the most of the day.
A ksar with a long story
Ksar Ait Ben Haddou is a fortified village of earthen architecture on the slopes of the Ounila Valley, its ramparts and decorated towers in shades of ochre and pink earth. It dates back to the seventeenth century and was an important stop on the Saharan trade route that linked Sudan to Marrakech through the Draa Valley and Tizi n Telouet. It has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1987.
Cinema made it famous far beyond Morocco. The ksar and its surroundings appear in Gladiator, Game of Thrones, The Mummy and Kingdom of Heaven, among many other productions. Walking its alleys, you will recognise more than one scene. For background before you go, read our guide to Ksar Ait Ben Haddou, and if the valley behind it interests you, the Ounila Valley continues the story upstream.
Three ways to ride there
By quad
The half day quad tour leaves from the outskirts of Ouarzazate and follows desert trails, rocky plateaus, dry riverbeds and scenic valleys, with your local guide leading you through remote Berber villages and viewpoints. When the silhouette of the ksar rises from the desert, you stop and have free time to explore its clay architecture, winding alleys and the hilltop granary. There are photo stops along the way and an optional tea break with a view. The Ait Ben Haddou quad tour starts from 85 USD.
By buggy
The buggy follows the same idea from the driver's seat. You cross desert trails and Berber villages, then explore the alleys and viewpoints of the ksar. It suits travellers who prefer a steering wheel to handlebars, and it starts from 250 USD.
On horseback
The half day horse ride crosses desert trails and villages at a gentler pace, on a strong, well trained horse matched to your experience. Arriving at the ksar on horseback has a timeless feel, close to how traders once reached it. You explore the alleys, climb to the granary and take in the view. It starts from 90 USD and is a good choice if motorised riding does not appeal to you.
If you want Ait Ben Haddou as part of a longer adventure, the full day quad and buggy tours combine it with the Kingdom of Heaven film location and the Fint oasis in a single day.
What you see along the way
The ride is half the experience. Expect a landscape that keeps changing: open gravel plains, rocky plateaus with long views toward the mountains, dry riverbeds where the ground turns sandy, and small Berber villages built from the same earth as the ksar. Your guide stops at viewpoints for photographs and explains how people in these villages live and farm.
At the ksar itself, take your time. The alleys climb between houses and towers to the old granary at the top of the hill, where the view opens over the riverbed and the valley. From there it is easy to understand why caravans stopped here, and why film directors kept coming back.
Tips for a good day
- Pick your hours. Ouarzazate has a desert climate with little rain. In July the heat reaches around 38°C, so earlier or later departures are usually more comfortable. In January lows fall to around 3°C, so bring a warm layer.
- Wear the right shoes. Closed shoes are essential on the vehicle and inside the ksar, where the alleys are uneven and climb steeply toward the granary.
- Protect yourself from sun and dust. Sunglasses, sun cream, a hat for the walk and a scarf for the ride all help. Carry water.
- Be respectful. People still live in and around the ksar. Ask before photographing residents, especially women, and keep your voice down in the quieter lanes.
- Ask about your group. If you are travelling with children, would like to carry a passenger, or have a health condition, say so in your request and the team will tell you what is possible. The same goes for your meeting point and timing.
Which option is right for you?
Choose the quad if you want an active, hands on ride with a bit of adrenaline at a moderate starting price. Choose the buggy if you prefer to sit and drive, and like the feel of a small off road car. Choose the horse if you want a quieter, slower approach and a different relationship with the landscape. All three leave from Ouarzazate, include a guide and safety equipment, and give you time to explore the ksar on foot.
When you have decided, send a reservation request with your date, the number of people and whether you prefer quad, buggy or horse. You can also ask the team on WhatsApp if you would like advice before you choose.
