Planning Adventure Activities in Southern Morocco from Ouarzazate

How to reach Ouarzazate, what the desert climate means for your days, money and language basics, and how to combine rides, day trips and desert tours.

Southern Morocco rewards travellers who give it a few days. From Ouarzazate you can ride a quad to a film set in the morning, drive through palm valleys the next day and sleep in the dunes after that. This guide covers the practical side: how to reach the city, what the climate means for your plans, money and language basics, and how to combine activities without spending your whole holiday in a car.

Getting to Ouarzazate

Ouarzazate has its own airport, code OZZ. Royal Air Maroc flies from Casablanca and Marrakech, and some low cost international airlines also serve the city. Routes and schedules change with the seasons, so check the airlines directly when you plan.

By road, Ouarzazate lies 200 km southeast of Marrakech. The road climbs over the High Atlas and the drive takes 4 to 5 hours. You have several ways to make the journey:

  • Bus. CTM and Supratours both run to Ouarzazate, and other companies have offices in the national bus station on Avenue Moulay Abdellah.
  • Grand taxi. Shared taxis leave from the station near the bus terminals once all six seats are taken. If you are in a hurry, you can pay for the empty seats and leave straight away.
  • Rental car. Driving yourself from Marrakech is possible. The mountain sections deserve daylight and patience, so avoid arriving late at night.

Within the city, petit taxis take up to three passengers on short trips but cannot leave the city limits. For anything further, you need a grand taxi or a private vehicle.

Climate and timing

Ouarzazate sits at 1119 m above sea level and has a desert climate with little rainfall. July is the hottest month, around 38 °C, and January the coldest, with lows around 3 °C. In practice that means two things.

  • In summer, plan active outings for the cooler hours and keep the middle of the day for a long lunch, a museum or a rest.
  • In winter, days can be bright but mornings and nights are cold. That matters for an early ride and even more for a night in a desert camp. On our Erg Chebbi tours a luxury camp is an option for more comfort, especially in the cold winter months.

Money, language and power

  • Currency. Morocco uses the dirham, written DH or MDH. Carry some cash for taxis, tea stops, small purchases and extras such as the optional camel ride at the Tinfou dunes.
  • Language. Tamazight is the native language of the region and most people speak Moroccan Arabic, called Darija. Because Ouarzazate welcomes many visitors, a lot of people speak French and some speak English. Our day trips and desert tours come with an English speaking driver.
  • Electricity. 220 to 230 V at 50 Hz, with type C and type J sockets.

How to combine activities over a few days

The region works best when you mix short rides with longer drives and keep one day flexible. These sample plans use the real durations of our tours.

Two days

On day one, take the half day quad tour to Ait Ben Haddou, riding plateaus and dry riverbeds to the UNESCO listed ksar, with free time to explore it. On day two, join a full day trip such as the Valley of Roses and Dades Gorges, with hotel pickup in Ouarzazate, a visit to nomad families living in caves and lunch in the gorges.

Three or four days

Start with a shorter ride, for example the three hour quad, buggy or horse route to the Fint oasis. Then head for the dunes. The two day Erg Chebbi tour drives around five hours each way and includes a sunset camel trek and a night in a camp near Merzouga. The Mhamid option is closer, about four and a half hours from Ouarzazate through the Draa Valley. If you have a fourth day, keep it light after the desert, with a short ride or a visit to the film studios.

Five days or more

Choose a three or four day desert tour, such as the Erg Chigaga loop or the South Oasis Route through the Saghro mountains, and add a full day ride around Ouarzazate before or after. Long drives and very active days do not mix well, so leave space between them.

Sending a booking request

Bookings start as a request, and the team then confirms availability and the details with you. For a quick and precise answer, include:

  • Your dates and how flexible they are.
  • The number of people and, for families, the ages of the children.
  • The activities you are considering and your riding experience.
  • Where you are staying in Ouarzazate.

Day trips and desert tours have per person prices that fall as the group grows, while quad, buggy and horse rides are listed with starting prices, so ask for a quote for your group. You can browse all our tours and activities and read the practical information page, which also lists emergency numbers and public holidays.

When your dates are set, send a reservation request, or ask the team on WhatsApp to help you shape the days around what you most want to see.
