Visiting the Oasis of Fint: A Practical Guide

What the name Fint means, how to get there from Ouarzazate by car, taxi, quad, buggy or horse, what to do in the oasis and the best way back via Kasbah Tifoultoute.

The palm oasis of Fint below rocky cliffs

Only 12 km south of Ouarzazate, yet invisible until the very last moment, the oasis of Fint is one of the most rewarding short escapes in the region. Date palms, flowing water and quiet Berber villages fill a valley cut into bare hills. This guide covers what the name means, how to get there, what to do once you arrive, and how to plan the trip back.

Why it is called Fint

In Tamazight, Fint means hidden, and the name makes sense as soon as you drive out there. After a while on a dirt road across stony desert, it is hard to imagine that any oasis lies ahead. In fact Fint sits below the horizon. Around kilometre 10 the track starts to zigzag down, and suddenly you see it: a green ribbon of date palms tucked between the hills.

How to get there

The distance is short, but the rough dirt road means the drive takes around 45 minutes through a desert landscape. You have several options.

By car

The tarmac soon turns into a small, rocky, unpaved track. Driven carefully and slowly, a small car can make it, but a four wheel drive is the better choice, and these are easy to find in Ouarzazate.

By grand taxi

Grand taxis wait near the bus station and near Place Al Mouahidine. The driver can wait in the oasis until you are ready to head back to the city. Agree on the arrangement before you leave.

On a day trip by vehicle

Many agencies in Ouarzazate offer a day trip to Fint by SUV with a driver, often combined with other stops in the area.

By quad, buggy or horse

The most memorable way to arrive is on a guided ride. The Fint oasis quad tour takes three hours and starts from 75 USD. You ride over arid plateaus, rocky hills and viewpoints, then share mint tea with locals in the oasis. The buggy tour to Fint follows desert trails and rocky ground to the springs and villages, also in three hours, from 220 USD. For a calmer pace, the horse ride to Fint follows old paths to the palm groves in three hours, from 70 USD. All three include a personal guide and safety equipment, and the river crossings below the palms are a highlight of the ride.

What to do in Fint

Fint is not a place of monuments. Its charm is daily life in a setting of palms and water. In the early hours children run to the primary school, women bake bread in outdoor ovens and others wash clothes in the river. Some men work in the gardens while others ride motorcycles to Ouarzazate. It is a fine place to slow down.

  • Stroll inside the oasis. Follow the paths between gardens and palms and watch how water is shared between the plots.
  • Hike along the river. Walk from the lower part of the valley to the upper side for changing views of cliffs, pools and villages.
  • Have lunch or a picnic. Small guesthouses serve meals, or you can eat your own picnic in the shade of a palm tree.
  • Share a tea. Mint tea with villagers is part of the guided rides and the best way to hear how life works here.

Be considerate when taking photographs. Ask before photographing people, especially women, and stay on paths rather than walking through cultivated plots.

A day trip or a night in the oasis?

Most travellers visit Fint for a few hours or a day, but it is well worth staying a night. A homestay with a local family is a wonderful way to taste Amazigh village life, and it is usually cheaper than a hotel in town. Hospitality in the villages is generous, and evenings in the oasis are quiet in a way the city cannot match. If a night appeals, plan it in advance and ask about the arrangement when you organise your trip.

Fint can surprise you in other ways too. In 2018, on a rare occasion, snow fell on Ouarzazate and the palms of Fint were dusted with white. It does not happen often, but winters here are cold, with January lows around 3°C, so bring warm layers if you visit in the cooler months. In summer the opposite applies: July reaches around 38°C, and the shade of the palms and the water become very welcome.

The way back via Kasbah Tifoultoute

If you are travelling by car or taxi, make a detour on the return. When you reach the main road, turn left and drive to Kasbah Tifoultoute, more than 300 years old. From its rooftop you get wide views over the Ouarzazate River, the city and the Atlas Mountains. From there you can continue into town or stop at the film studios. A small piece of film trivia: some sequences of The Way Back were shot at Atlas Studios on the same set as Kundun. Our guide to Fint oasis has more background on the valley.

Plan your visit

  • Wear closed shoes for the paths and river crossings, and bring sun protection and water.
  • If you ride, tell the team your experience level so the guide can adjust the pace.
  • If you are travelling with children or have a health condition, mention it in your request and ask which option suits your group best.
